You’re going to need boxes, lots of boxes. They can be expensive so keep an eye on local Facebook selling groups and Marketplace where you’ll often find people giving away their used boxed for free.
Go Tuesday
Fridays are the most popular day to move, demand can make it more expensive. Tuesdays are the quietest, when companies are less busy, so you might be able to haggle on price, if you can guarantee a Tuesday move.
P.I.Y.
Pack it yourself. Some companies will charge for packing, avoid this extra cost by doing it all yourself.
Declutter
The two main factors in removal costs are distance and volume of contents. “Once we get into the new house, we should sort out all this junk…”. No! Get it done now to avoid paying to move items you’ll never use again.
Unplug/Unplumb
Some movers charge for disconnecting appliances. Make sure everything is defrosted, unplugged and disconnected from the water supplies or drainage. Clean inside and allow to air dry to prevent mold.
Be Ready
Don’t leave everything until the last minute or the morning of your move. If things overrun because you’re not ready, you may incur extra fees.
Do The Simple Stuff
If you’re able, another fine saving is moving as much as you can yourself (roping in friends and relatives), even moving all the light items and leaving the heavy, bulky or trickier things like freezers and wardrobes to the pros could cut down on costs.
